CHICAGO – Former Santa Clara three-time All-American Julie Johnston was one of 18 players selected to the U.S. Women's National Team roster for the 2016 Olympic Games.
Johnston was a key member of the U.S. team that won the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada. This is the first Olympic roster for Johnston.
"I feel anytime you can represent the country it's an amazing honor," Johnston said after being named to the team. "Coming off the World Cup win, it was such a great journey. Right after that win I just wanted more, and to have another opportunity to play with this team in a big tournament. Rio was the next stop and this whole process always makes me fall in love with the sport over and over again."
Johnston becomes the fifth Bronco to participate in the Olympics. Brandi Chastain won gold medals in 1996 and 2004 and came away with a silver medal in 2000. Nikki Serlenga and Danielle Slaton won silver medals with Chastain in 2000. Aly Wagner was on the 2004 gold medal winning team and added another gold in 2008.
Santa Clara has had 16 players on the U.S. National Team roster since 1988.
In her time at Santa Clara, Johnston was a three-time first-team All-American, four-time All-West Region selection, four-time All-WCC honoree, the 2010 WCC Freshman of the Year and the 2013 WCC Player of the Year.
