SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's soccer is no stranger to being represented on the U.S. Women's National Team but the Broncos will add another name to the impressive list of former players representing their country. Sofia Huerta has been called up to the USWNT camp for the upcoming Tournament of Nations and will join veteran national team player Julie Johnston. It will be Huerta's first time with the U.S. team.
Huerta has dual citizenship with Mexico and the U.S. and played in in the U20 World Cup for Mexico in 2012 in addition to some friendlies with the full Mexican national team in 2013. An injury kept her out of the 2014 CONCACAF Women's Championship that would have permanently tied her to Mexico.
She won't be game eligible as her FIFA transfer is processed but will still be one step closer to fulfilling a childhood dream.
Huerta plays for the Chicago Red Stars in the NWSL along with Johnston. She was drafted 11th overall in the 2014 draft and was a finalist for the 2015 Rookie of the Year.
At Santa Clara Huerta was a two-time All-American (2013-14), a three-time All-West Region selection (2011-13), a four-time member of the First Team All-WCC team, and the 2014 co-WCC Player of the Year.
Huerta is No. 6 on Santa Clara's all-time list with 45 career goals and No. 8 with 109 points. Her 17 goals in 2014 is tied for seventh in a single season and her 16 in 2013 is tied for 10th. She also had two career hat tricks (Nov. 9, 2013 vs. Gonzaga and Sept. 7, 2014 vs. Fresno State).
