Women's Soccer Heads to Cal Sunday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After an exciting season-opener, Santa Clara women's soccer heads on the road for the first time in 2017. The Broncos play at Cal Sunday at 1 p.m. on Pac-12 Network with Kate Scott and former Bronco Aly Wagner with the call.

On Friday night, Santa Clara topped San Jose State 2-1 on a late goal from freshman Julie Doyle.

The Broncos are 17-21-7 all-time against the Bears. Last season Santa Clara topped Cal 1-0 in double overtime at Stevens Stadium in the second game of the season.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara (1-0) got goals from Doyle and Maddy Gonzalez in the opener. Transfer Maria Sanchez had the assist on Gonzalez's goal and attempted five shots with three on goal. Doyle attempted three shots with all being on frame in the first game.

The Broncos outshot the Spartans 18-7 and held a 12-4 advantage in shots on goal. They also earned nine corner kicks while allowing four.

Melissa Lowder played all 90 minutes in net and made three saves.


THE BEARS
Cal (1-0) won its season-opener 2-1 over UC Irvine. The Bears outshot the Anteaters 9-7 and 5-4 in shots on goal. They only earned one corner kick while surrendering four.

Abi Kim scored both goals for Cal on assists from Curo Bergsvand and Emma Westin. Kim attempted four shots and put three on goal while Bergsvand attempted three with one being on target.

Emily Boyd stopped three shots in net.
