Women's Soccer Heads to Cal for First Round of NCAA Tournament

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's soccer begins the NCAA Tournament Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Cal.

They closed out the regular season with a pair of wins over San Diego and BYU to end the year on a seven-match winning streak while outscoring opponents 24-6.

SERIES HISTORY
Santa Clara is 17-22-7 all-time against Cal with the first meeting coming in 1980. Earlier this year, the Broncos held a late lead in Berkeley but ultimately fell 2-1.

NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Santa Clara has been to 27 NCAA Tournaments in program history and made the College Cup 10 times, culminating with a national championship in 2001. Last season the Broncos made a run to the quarterfinals while knocking-off top-seeded Stanford in double overtime in the second round.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara (13-6-1, 8-1 WCC) finished second in the WCC standings, just one point behind Pepperdine. The Broncos led the conference with 46 goals scored and 127 points and tied for the league lead with 35 assists.

They are led on offense by Kelsey Turnbow who finished the regular season second in the WCC with 12 goals and second on the Broncos with five assists. She has the most goals by a freshman in a season since Leslie Osborne scored 13 in 2001, the year Santa Clara won the national championship.

Maddy Gonzalez has scored eight goals and added four assists while Julie Doyle also has eight goals and three assists but will miss the rest of the year with an injury. Maria Sanchez finished tied for the conference lead with six assists and has scored four goals. Seven other Broncos have scored at least once.

Melissa Lowder has appeared in 15 games in net and made 62 saves for a .738 save percentage. She has four shutouts with Courtney Ogren also recording one.

THE BEARS
Cal (13-5-1, 6-4-1 Pac 12) has lost three in a row, all by scores of 1-0. The Bears fell at No 5 USC, at No. 6 UCLA, and at No. 1 Stanford. They have outscored opponents 25-9 on the season while putting 114 of their 250 shots on goal.

Abi Kim leads the team with seven goals and 14 points. Miranda Nild has scored six times and added an assist for 13 points. Luca Deza's four assists lead the team and she has added two goals as well. Nine other Bears have found the back of the net.

Emily Boyd has allowed nine goals for a 0.46 GAA and has made 76 saves for a .894 save percentage. Boyd's 10 shutouts are tied for 12th nationally.
