Women's Soccer Takes on Vanderbilt in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's soccer continues its postseason as the Broncos head to South Carolina to take on Vanderbilt in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Friday at noon Pacific.

The Broncos took down No. 19 Cal 2-1 on Saturday in the first round. The win avenged a defeat earlier in the season and was the first time this season a team scored more than one goal on the Bears.

SERIES HISTORY
Santa Clara is 1-0 all-time against Vanderbilt with the only meeting coming in 1997. The Broncos won that match at home 4-1.

NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Santa Clara has been to 27 NCAA Tournaments in program history and made the College Cup 10 times, culminating with a national championship in 2001. The victory over Cal was the 52nd in program history in the postseason.

THE BRONCOS
Santa Clara (14-6-1, 8-1 WCC) finished second in the WCC standings, just one point behind Pepperdine. The Broncos lead the conference with 48 goals, 35 assists, and 132 points.

Santa Clara has gotten 37 of its 48 goals from underclassmen and 22 from freshmen.

They are led on offense by Kelsey Turnbow, the WCC Freshman of the Year, who has scored 13 goals and is second on the Broncos with five assists. She has the most goals by a freshman in a season since Leslie Osborne also scored 13 in 2001, the year Santa Clara won the national championship.

Maddy Gonzalez has scored eight goals and added four assists while Julie Doyle also has eight goals and three assists but will miss the rest of the year with an injury. Maria Sanchez is tied for the conference lead with six assists and has scored four goals. Seven other Broncos have scored at least once.

Melissa Lowder has appeared in 16 games in net and made 64 saves for a .736 save percentage. She has four shutouts with Courtney Ogren also recording one.

THE COMMODORES
Vanderbilt (13-6-2, 6-3-1 SEC) is on a four-match unbeaten streak with a win over No. 5 Tennessee and one over No. 14 Ohio State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Commodores tied Arkansas 1-1 in the SEC semifinals but failed to advance 4-2 on penalty kicks.

They have outscored opponents 28-23 while putting 86 of their 216 shots on goal.

Stephanie Amack leads the team with five goals and Simone Charley leads with six assists and 14 points. Charley and Jackie Welch have both scored four times with nine other scoring at least one goal each.

Kaitlyn Fahrner has seen the bulk of time in net, appearing in 15 games and allowing 12 goals for a 0.84 GAA. She has 69 saves and a .852 save percentage to go with four shutouts. Vanderbilt has seven shutouts as a team.
