Women's Soccer Gets Past Vanderbilt in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

Postgame Quotes | NCAA Tournament Bracket

COLUMBIA S.C. – Playing across the country, Santa Clara women's soccer took down Vanderbilt 3-1 Friday afternoon to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year. It is the first time since 2004-05 that the Broncos have made the third round in back-to-back seasons.

Maddy Gonzalez led the way on offense for the Broncos (14-6-1) with a pair of goals. She got Santa Clara a lead in the first half and put the Broncos back on top less than a minute after a Commodore (13-6-2) goal.

After the Commodores evened it at 1-all in the 35th, Gonzalez went down the field on the kickoff and won the ball before chipping a shot from just inside the box that slipped under the crossbar for the game-winner.

Maria Sanchez gave Santa Clara some breathing room right out of halftime. In the 48th, Sanchez got the ball and dribbled to find some space before blasting a shot low and inside the right post from 20-yards out.

Some nice footwork from Sanchez and a run from Kat Uhl led to the first goal of the game in the 18th. Sanchez flicked the ball backwards with her heel to Uhl who dribbled down the field and into the box by beating a couple Vanderbilt defenders. She got just outside the six-yard box and sent one across the goal mouth to Gonzalez who one-time her shot inside the right post.
