SANTA CLARA, Calif. – No. 9 Santa Clara women's soccer kept its season-opening winning streak alive with a 2-0 victory over Kansas State Thursday night at home.
The Broncos (4-0) put 10 of their 21 shots on goal with WCC-point leader Maria Sanchez scoring her second goal in as many games and last year's leading scorer, Kelsey Turnbow, adding an insurance goal late.
For the second game in a row, a Bronco was taken down in the box, this time Machaela George, to lead to a penalty. Sanchez took the chance from the spot and finished low and right, beating the keeper who guessed right to make it 1-0 in the 19th minute.
Santa Clara added another goal in the 73rd after a wild play. A free kick from just outside the right side of the box led to a blocked shot that went straight to DB Pridham. Pridham took a shot but had it saved. The ball bounced back to Turnbow who made it 2-0 with her second of the year.
The Wildcats (3-1) made the Broncos earn everything, and created some dangerous chances of their own, putting six of eight shots on frame.
In net, Melissa Lowder recorder her second consecutive shutout while making a season-high six saves.
