Tough Defense Helps No. 7 Women's Soccer Battle To Draw at No. 1 Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. – No. 7 Santa Clara women's soccer went on the road and battled to a 1-1 draw at No. 1 Stanford Sunday evening, snapping the Cardinal's 29-match winning streak.

Melissa Lowder and the Broncos (7-1-1) defense came up huge, allowing just one goal while facing 28 shots, including 15 on goal from the potent Stanford (7-0-1) offense. Lowder made a season-high 13 saves, one off her career-high of 14 (at Stanford, Nov. 18, 2016), and Santa Clara defenders stopped two shots from going in at the goal line.

With less than five seconds remaining in the second overtime, a flurry in front of the net nearly gave Stanford the golden goal but a Bronco defender was able to knock the ball away and Lowder saved the final attempt.

Santa Clara drew a penalty kick in the 66th minute after Julie Doyle was taken down in the box. Alex Loera took the attempt that was saved by Alison Jahansouz but the rebound went into the middle of the box and Machaela George finished for her first of the year to make it 1-1.

Stanford scored the first of the match in the 43rd minute when Sophia Smith slipped behind the Santa Clara defense. After taking a few touches into the box, Smith hit a low shot to the right side of the net to make it 1-0.

Right out of halftime, Catarina Macario nearly made it a two-goal lead with Lowder off her line but Gabbie McWilliams was in the right place and headed the shot over the crossbar for the save.
