Lowder Nabs WCC Women's Soccer Player of the Week Honors

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Coming off a monster weekend, Santa Clara women's soccer goalkeeper Melissa Lowder was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday.

The senior captain had her best game of the year Sunday at No. 1 Stanford. Lowder made a season-high 13 saves en route to a 1-1 tie, snapping the Cardinal's 29-match winning streak. The 13 saves was one off her career-high of 14, also made at Stanford on Nov. 18, 2016 in the Broncos 1-0 double overtime victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

To begin the week, Lowder picked up her fourth shutout of the year against TCU on Thursday in Santa Clara's 3-0 win. The Horned Frogs were the seventh opponent in a row for the Broncos that at least received votes in the weekly poll.

It was the second WCC Player of the Week for Santa Clara in 2018. Maria Sanchez was honored Aug. 27 after tying a program-record with four assists in a 4-1 Bronco win over Cal.

Santa Clara concludes nonconference play this week, beginning with Cal Poly Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Stevens Stadium before traveling to UC Santa Barbara Sunday at 1 p.m.
