SANTA CLARA, Calif. – For the second time this weekend, No. 7 Santa Clara women's soccer picked up a one-goal victory at home, topping Gonzaga 1-0 Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos (14-2-1, 5-1 WCC) once again controlled the ball for much of the match, outshooting the Bulldogs (8-4-3, 3-2-1 WCC) 20-5 and 9-1 in shots on frame, but could only find the back of the net once.
Gonzaga keeper Isabel Jones picked up eight saves on the day to keep the game tight throughout, but her one mistake was the difference in the match.
In the eighth minute Maria Sanchez put some moves on her defender before taking a shot in the box that went right through the legs of the Jones to make it 1-0.
Santa Clara kept up the offensive pressure the rest of the way, creating several dangerous chances, many set up by Sanchez, but was unable to convert.
In net, Melissa Lowder faced just one shot on target, coming in the 78th minute, that she saved and picked up her sixth shutout this season.
