LOS ANGELES – After having the upper-hand for 110 minutes, No. 7 Santa Clara women's soccer was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament in the second round in penalty kicks 5-4 by North Carolina State after a 1-1 tie Friday night on the campus of UCLA.
The Broncos (17-3-2) dominated during the run of play, outshooting the Wolfpack 25-3 with a 12-2 edge in shots on goal but were inches away all night. Santa Clara also drew an impressive 13 corner kicks while allowing three.
Both teams made their first four penalty kick attempts. The Wolfpack (12-6-3) started the fifth round with a make and Courtney Ogren stepped up for the Broncos but fired wide left to end the match.
After knocking on the door all day, Santa Clara finally broke through in the 62nd minute. Maddy Gonzalez found Maria Sanchez on the left side of the field and after dribbling into the box, Sanchez ripped her shot into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
The Wolfpack evened things up in the 78th on a goal Tziarra King and assists from Courtney Walker and Taylor Porter. King took a pass that slipped through and finished inside the far post.
NOTES
- Santa Clara is now 2-0-1 all-time against North Carolina State.
- Santa Clara now has a 21-match unbeaten streak (12-0-9) in overtime, dating back to the 2014 season. The last overtime loss came Aug. 24, 2014 vs. Cal 2-1.
- Santa Clara finished with its most wins since 2005.
