Late Penalty Kick Sinks No. 13 Women's Soccer Against No. 12 Texas A&M

SANTA CLARA, Calif.– Despite being on the offensive most of the night, No. 13 Santa Clara women's soccer dropped a 3-2 match to No. 12 Texas A&M Thursday night at Stevens Stadium in the 2019 season opener.

The Broncos (0-1) held a 19-8 advantage in shots and an 8-5 edge in shots on goal while drawing 13 corners kicks and allowing just two, but the Aggies (1-0) got the benefit of a foul call in the box in in the final 10 minutes and took advantage on the ensuing penalty kick.

Jimena Lopez stepped to the spot with the game even at 2-all in the 81st minute and connected on her attempt inside the right post to give Texas A&M a 3-2 lead.

In a game that was back-and-forth all night, the Aggies struck first in the 22nd minute when Ally Watt got behind the defense and into the box before hitting a low shot that just trickled over the goal line to make it 1-0.

Izzy D'Aquila, in her collegiate debut, evened the score at 1-apiece seven minutes later in the 29th. After Keren Goor, also making her debut, forced a turnover just outside the box, D'Aquila took the ball and finished low and just inside the left post for her first collegiate goal.

Santa Clara took a lead early in the second half on a nice play from returners Julie Doyle and Kelsey Turnbow. Doyle lobbed the ball to Turnbow who knocked in down to her feet and found the back of the net in the 51st minute despite having a defender draped all over her.

Like the Broncos did in the first half, the Aggies tied the game just minutes later. In the 59th minute, Addie McCain got a ball that went off a defender and knocked it home to even it at 2-2.
