SANTA CLARA, Calif.– A goal just before the half sparked the No. 13 Santa Clara women's offense to a 4-1 win over Oregon Sunday afternoon at home.
The Broncos (1-1) put seven of their 12 shots on goal, being led by two goals and an assist from freshman Izzy D'Aquila. Alex Loera got the scoring started with Markika Guay also finding the back of the net. Loera, Kelcie Hedge, and Maddy Gonzalez also collected an assist each.
The Ducks (0-1-1) offense was also on point for much of the match, attempted 13 shots and putting seven on frame but five saves from Courtney Ogren kept them to just the one tally.
With less than a minute to go before the break and the Santa Clara offense struggling to find its groove, Loera got the ball 40 yards out and took a few touches before firing perfect shot into the upper right corner of the goal to make it 1-0.
Less than three game minutes later, a defensive miscue by Oregon in the led to a 2-0 Broncos lead. A failed clear let Hedge slide into a ball and get it to D'Aquila who used a touch to get around the keeper and find the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The offense wasn't done and struck again in the 52nd, this time off the foot of Marika Guay to stretch it to a 3-0 lead. D'Aquila slid a nice pass in the box to Guay who one-timed her shot.
Oregon responded seconds later when Jordan Wormdahl took a shot from outside the left side of the box that hit the right post and just snuck inside the opposite post off the bounce to make it 3-1.
Quick passing in the box in the 65th minute got the goal back and made it a 4-1 lead for Santa Clara. Loera tapped a pass to Gonzalez who found D'Aquila for her second of the day.
