WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.– The 19th ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team fell at Wake Forest 2-1 Wednesday afternoon despite controlling the ball for much of the day.
The Demon Deacons (3-0) goalkeeper Mac Carmichael held off an onslaught of Broncos (1-2) shots, making eight saves on the day. Santa Clara was in the offensive end of the field most of the match and outshot Wake Forest 16-4 and 9-4 in shots on goal while also drawing 13 corner kicks while not surrendering any.
Down 2-0 in the 76th minute, Kelsey Turnbow sent a long pass to Kelcie Hedge who headed the ball down to Alex Loera just inside the left side of the box. Loera one-timed a shot inside the right post that cut the Broncos deficit to 2-1.
Santa Clara responded by pushing forward and continually getting the ball in the box but was unable to get the equalizer as the clock ran out.
The scoring got started when a failed clear by the Broncos in the 18th minute gave Wake Forest an early lead. A pass was deflected away by the defense but rolled into open space before Estelle Laurier blasted one from outside the box to make it 1-0.
Wake Forest added another to make it 2-0 the 65th off of a set piece. A free kick by Sofia Rossi was played short and moved into the box before a cross by Hannah Betfort found the head of Abby McNamara for the goal.

- Santa Clara is now 3-1-1 all-time against Wake Forest.
- D.B. Pridham made her season debut.
- The Broncos have a 33-6 edge in corner kicks this year.
