No. 19 Women's Soccer Loses OT Heartbreaker at No. 10 Duke

DURHAM, N.C.– A goal in the final 90 seconds of regulation sent No. 19 Santa Clara women's soccer to overtime at No. 10 Duke but the Blue Devils escaped with a 3-2 victory, snapping the Broncos 21-match (12-0-9) unbeaten streak in overtime that dated back to Aug. 24, 2014.

With the first overtime period winding down, Marykate McGuire stepped up and scored the game-winner for Duke (2-1-1) in the 99th minute, with just 70 seconds left on the clock.

The Broncos (1-3) once again held the advantage in shots (15-12) and shots on goal (9-7), getting five from DB Pridham and four, with all coming on target, from Izzy D'Aquila.

D'Aquila scored both goals and now has five on the year with DB Pridham and Kelsey Turnbow adding assists.

The true freshman scored her first in the 55th minute from Pridham and her second came with just 90 seconds left in regulation from Turnbow to force overtime.

The Blue Devils got a goal from Mackenzie Pluck in the 61st to even the score at 1-all and Ella Stevens gave them the lead in the 72nd off an assist from McGuire.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara is now 3-1 all-time against Duke.
  • The Broncos now have a 36-8 lead in corner kicks this season.
