Women's Soccer Snaps Cal's Scoreless Streak But Falls 2-1

BERKELEY, Calif.– Despite being the first team to score on Cal in seven matches this season, Santa Clara women's soccer fell at the Golden Bears 2-1 Sunday afternoon on the road.

Cal's (7-0) staunch defense kept the Broncos (4-4) high-powered offense in check, allowing 11 shots and four on frame but not an extraordinary number of dangerous chances. The Bears offense managed eight shots with five on frame.

After Santa Clara had evened the score midway through the second period, Cal retook the lead in the 79th off a rebound. A shot from Emma Westin hit the crossbar and Natalie Hueston gathered before tapping in a shot in to make it a 2-1 game.

The Broncos best chance to even the score came in the 79th when Izzy D'Aquila got a head on a cross and only a great diving save by Angelina Anderson kept her team ahead.

The freshman D'Aquila continued her fantastic freshman season with a goal in the 63rd to even the game at 1-all. Kelsey Turnbow placed a corner perfectly and D'Aquila headed it into the back of the net.

The goal broke a streak of 602 scoreless minutes to start the season for the Bears. They were the last team in the country to concede a goal.

With just 11 seconds left in the first half, Cal broke Santa Clara's streak of 314 scoreless minutes to take a 1-0 lead. Abigail Kim sent a cross from deep in the corner to the foot of Emma Westin who one-timed a shot inside the left post.
