SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Despite recovering from a pair of deficits, Santa Clara women's soccer fell to No. 3 Stanford 4-2 Sunday night at home before one of the largest crowds in school history.
After the second time the Broncos (4-5) came back to tie the score, the decisive goal was scored in the 77th minute off a free kick. Catarina Macario took the set piece from 25 yards out and placed it above the leaping goalkeeper to make the score 3-2.
The Cardinal (7-1) would add another goal in the 84th from Madison Haley on a beautiful pass from Abby Greubel.
Stanford finished the night with 17 shots while putting 10 on goal. The Cardinal got goals from Macario, Haley, Carly Malatskey, and Sophia Smith.
After falling behind 1-0, a scramble in the box off a corner in the 40th minute led to the Broncos tying the game. A deflection off Maddy Gonzalez went to Machaela George who scored to make it 1-all.
Just seconds later Stanford retook the lead and carried it into halftime but in the 52nd Kelsey Turnbow evened the score with some fancy footwork. After getting around a few Stanford defenders, she placed a perfect shot in the upper-right corner of the goal to make it 2-2.
Santa Clara finished with 12 shots and five on goal.
Courtney Ogren made some nice saves en route to collecting four on the day. Her opposition, Lauren Rood, picked up three saves.
