No. 20 Women's Soccer Draws at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – On a wet and rainy night in the Pacific Northwest, No. 20 Santa Clara women's soccer and Portland played to a 1-1 draw.

The game was even from the opening whistle with the Broncos (8-5-2, 2-0-2 WCC) holding a slight edge in shots 16-14 but the Pilots (4-4-4, 0-2-2 WCC) with the advantage in shots on goal at 6-5.

Both keepers played well with Courtney Ogren making five saves and Jenny Wahlen collecting three, but the post may have played the biggest role in the game.

In the 99th minute Ogren got caught in a bad position and was issued a yellow card that led to a penalty kick for the Pilots. Larkin Russell took the chance but hit the post to keep the game alive.

The Broncos got on the board in the 22nd minute. Maddy Gonzalez turned in the box and sent a low ball to Machaela George who blasted a shot that was too hot to handle for the Wahlen and found the back of the net to make it 1-0.

Portland broke through in the 77th to even the score at 1-1. Russell got a ball to Taryn Ries just outside the 18-yard box and she one-timed a lob that just grazed Ogren's fingers before going in.
