Early Goal, Strong Defense Lift Women's Soccer To 1-0 Win at Gonzaga

SPOKANE, Wash. – Santa Clara women's soccer made an early goal hold up in a 1-0 win at Gonzaga Saturday night.

In just the third minute, the Broncos (10-5-2, 4-0-2 WCC) took advantage of a bad clear by the Bulldogs (10-5-1, 3-2-1 WCC). The attempted clear was sent to Machaela George who sent it into the box, but her pass was deflected. Fortunately for Santa Clara, it went right to Kelsey Turnbow who slid into a shot that found the back of the net. It tied Turnbow with Izzy D'Aquila for the team lead with 11.

The Bronco defense stayed strong for the next 87 minutes as Gonzaga put seven of its 11 shots on goal but couldn't find the equalizer.

The best chance came in the 63rd minute when Samantha Heilman got off a good shot, but Sophie Whitehouse made a diving save to keep the lead for her team.

The graduate transfer Whitehouse was making her first start for Santa Clara and ended with seven saves. It was the team's eighth clean sheet of the year.

The Broncos did manage to put some pressure on the Gonzaga defense, getting off 10 shots and five on target but Lyza Bosselmann and Isabel Jones both made two saves while playing a half each.
