Nicolos Named WCC Defensive Player of the Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Santa Clara goalkeeper Marlee Nicolos was named the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after a stellar performance at No. 13 BYU on Saturday night.

Nicolos doubled her previous career-high with 12 saves while posting her fifth clean sheet of the season as the two teams battled to a scoreless draw. Her final save of the night was a diving stop that came with just seconds remaining to preserve the tie.

The whole Bronco defense stepped up in Provo, accomplishing something rarely done. They shutout the Cougars at home for the first time since then-No. 1 Stanford did it August 30, 2018. It was a span of 40 matches.

The tie puts Santa Clara in position to clinch its third consecutive, and 13th overall, WCC title with a win in either of its final two games. The first chance comes Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against Gonzaga at Stevens Stadium on ESPNU.
