Bronco Softball Opens Season With Losses

Feb. 3, 2001

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team opened the 2001 season with 9-0, 1-0 losses in a doubleheader at the University of Pacific Saturday at Bill Simoni Field.

The Tiger pitchers were the highlight of the day with freshman Jennifer Dacre throwing a no-hitter in her first college appearance in the second game of the series. Junior Cindy Ball tossed a one-hitter in the first game.

Santa Clara held Pacific to just one run in the second game. The Tigers scored in the bottom of the seventh inning when Boni Kading scored on a single. Kading singled to right field with one out and advanced to third on a ground out to second. Moody smacked a single to right field and scored Kading for the win.

In the first game of the afternoon, Pacific shut down Santa Clara's bats, while the Tigers' bats came alive. The game was called after four and a half innings because of the eight-run rule. Pacific put five runs on the board in the second inning with the help of four hits and two Santa Clara errors. The Tigers added four more runs in the fourth with three hits, including a double by Thurman. Ball threw a one-hitter and picked up the win for the Tigers.

"We know we have our work cut out for us this season," said Santa Clara Head Coach Marcy Crouch. "Pacific has a really strong squad and today's games were tough matchups of us at this point in our program. We are making strides and I really feel good about where we are headed."
