Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara's softball team earned its first win of the season, a 2-0 victory over UC Davis in the second game of a doubleheader this evening at Marsalli Park. The Aggies won the early game 3-1. The Broncos are now 1-5 on the season, while UC Davis moves to 7-2 overall.

In the second game, Santa Clara recorded its two scores in the bottom of the fifth inning. It began with one out and a single down the left line by junior pitcher Deanna Rodriguez. Senior outfielder Sydney Wiginton, nursing a broken finger on her left hand, entered the game as a pinch runner and promptly stole second. Senior outfielder Melanie Barker reached first on a walk and advanced to second after sophomore catcher Roni Rivera was hit by a pitch on her elbow. With the bases loaded, an illegal substitution cost the Broncos an out, but it did not affect the momentum. Freshman second baseman Tess Nesbitt recorded a double and two RBIs as Wiginton and Barker scored. It marked Nesbitt's fourth straight game with at least one hit.

Rodriguez picked up her first win of the season and is 1-1. Amy Rosson took the loss for the Aggies and is 1-2 on the season.

In the opener, UC Davis' leadoff batter Amy Rutschow was walked and then advanced on a wild pitch and later scored on an SCU error. The Aggies did pick up two earned runs in the third inning as Susan Churchwell singled to center field to Bring in Rutschow and Libby Bivings, who posted singles to centerfield and shortstop, respectively.

Santa Clara answered in the bottom of the fourth with its only run of the opener. The Broncos opened the inning with singles by freshman shortstop Vanessa Werner and junior first baseman Kristi Harrington. A sacrafice by Rivera scored Werner.

Courtney Barrett improved to 4-0 on the mound with the afternoon victory, while Krista Barry took the loss for the Broncos and is 0-3 on the season.

Santa Clara remains at home and will host UC Riverside on Friday, Feb. 9 at 5 p.m. and UC Santa Barbara on Sunday, Feb. 11 at noon. Both contests will be doubleheaders at Marsalli Park.
