SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara's softball team improved their record to 2-6, with their 1-0 victory over Humboldt State in the second game of a doubleheader this evening at Marsalli Park. The Lumberjacks won the first game of the day 4-2, moving their overall record to 6-3-1.
In the second game, Santa Clara recorded their run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. It started with one out and a single down the right field line by pitcher Krista Barry. Jayne Whitney then moved Barry to second with a sacrifice bunt, costing the Broncos an out. They continued their energy with a single by Sydney Wiginton, sending Barry to third. With runners at the corners, head coach of the Lumberjacks, Frank Cheek, replaced pitcher Melanie Baker with Amy Terrones. Terrones walked the next Bronco batter, Tess Nesbitt, which loaded the bases for Kristi Harrington. The first pitch hit Harrington and Barry scored. The inning ended with a force out at third.
Barry picked up her first win of the season and is 1-3. Melanie Baker took the loss for the Lumberjacks and is 1-1 on the season.
In the opener, Humboldt State was able to produce a run in the top of the first inning. With runners on second and third, Megan Corriea flew out to left field, and third base runner Kelly Morgan was able to score on the tag-up. The second inning also manufactured runs for the Lumberjacks as an error by the Santa Clara left fielder allowed Andrea Williams to score. In the third inning, Christen Hardee drove in Sarah Delsman on a single to center, following Delsman's double to left field. Humboldt State produced their final run of the game in the seventh inning. Kelly Sosinski started the rally with a single to right field. Corriea and Delsman, each with a single, where then able to drive in Sosinksi.
Santa Clara answered in the bottom of the third with two runs. Whitney opened the inning with a walk. Wiginton then singled to the shortstop moving the runner to second. Nesbitt produced a single, driving in Whitney. Lauren Fissori then entered the game as a pinch hitter for Lindsey Braff. Fissori reached on a fielder's choice, as Nesbitt advanced to third, and Wiginton was out at home on a throw from the shortstop. Harrington then grounded out to third as Nesbitt scored.
Santa Clara will play at San Jose State for a twinbill beginning at noon on Saturday, Feb. 17, and will return home for a midweek doubleheader against Tennessee on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at Marsalli Park.
