Softball Sweeps Tennessee

SANTA CLARA, Calif. --Santa Clara softball defeated University of Tennessee 1-0 in both games of the doubleheader this evening at Marsalli Park. The Broncos move their overall record to 5-7 as the Lady Volunteers fall to 7-10.

In the first match, after seven innings of play, the game was scoreless. The International Tie Breaker rule was placed into effect in the top of the eighth, placing a runner for the Lady Vols on second at the start of the inning. Nevertheless, the Broncos managed to shutdown the Tennessee offense. Jayne Whitney led-off for the Broncos and produced a sacrifice bunt, which moved Melanie Barker to third. With one out, Tess Nesbitt came to bat and popped up to the shortstop, bringing the Broncos to two outs. Their determination was not detoured as Sydney Wiginton stepped into the batters box. Wiginton reached first on a throwing error by the Tennessee third baseman, scoring Barker.

Barry held Tennessee scoreless and picked up her third win of the season splitting her record 3-3. Stephanie Humphrey took the loss for the Lady Volunteers and is 3-4 on the season.

In second game of the doubleheader, the Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Tracie Hall started the inning with a single to center field. As a result of a throwing error by the Tennessee catcher, Hall advanced to second. Pitcher Deanna Rodriguez then moved Hall to third with a sacrifice bunt, recording one out in the inning. Nesbitt then doubled to right field and Hall scored.

Rodriguez managed to hold Tennessee scoreless, and move her season record to 2-4. Nicole Borg took the loss for the Vols splitting her record 3-3.

Santa Clara will play at a tournament hosted by UC Santa Barbara this weekend. Their first game is scheduled for Friday the 23rd against Auburn at 9 a.m., followed by a game against Virginia at 11 a.m.
