Softball Ends NIST with 3-1 loss to San Jose State

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Sophomore catcher Roni Rivera was named to the All-Tournament Team after a stellar performance at the National Invitational Softball Tournament this weekend. Santa Clara lost to host San Jose State 3-1 this morning to conclude weekend play at the Twin Creeks Complex in Sunnyvale.

The Broncos fall to 9-14 on the season and finished 2-4 at the NIST, with wins over Sacramento State and Miami of Ohio.

Rivera earned the All-NIST honors aver posting one run, four hits and one RBI in 12 at-bats on the weekend, for a .333 mark. She was a defensive spark for the Broncos, providing 21 put outs and seven assists.

San Jose State started the game with three straight singles to load the bases, but only recorded one RBI in the inning.

The Broncos answered with their own run. After one out, junior first baseman Kristi Harrington recorded a single, followed by sophomore designated hitter Tracie Hall's double to right center, advancing Harrington to third. Junior pitcher Deanna Rodriguez singled to center field to bring Harrington home.

The second inning saw another San Jose State run, for the game-winner. The Spartans added an insurance run in the seventh inning and finished the game with 10 hits. The Broncos posted eight hits with Rodriguez moving to 4-7 on the mound with the loss. Sabrina Quintero recorded the win for SJSU and is now 5-6 on the year.

Additionally, Rodriguez and freshman short stop Vanessa Werner stole one base each.

The Broncos return to action on Wednesday for a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico. The action is set to start at 5 p.m. at Marsalli Park.
