Softball Splits with Cal Poly

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Broncos topped Cal Poly 1-0 in extra innings in the first game of the doubleheader, but were then defeated by the Mustangs in the second game 8-2 this afternoon at Marsalli Park. Santa Clara's record moves to 10-17 on the season, as the Mustangs move to 13-12.

The Broncos held the Mustangs scoreless through nine innings of play during the first game. Santa Clara started its winning ninth inning with a single to the left side by Roni Rivera, who was replaced by pinch runner Jenee Cline. Pinch hitter Lindsey Back then produced a sacrifice bunt and reached first on an error by the second baseman, moving Cline to second. Vanessa Werner then advanced Cline to third and Back to second with a sacrifice bunt, recording one out in the inning. Jennifer Henderson then entered the game as a pinch hitter and drove in Cline, the winning run.

Krista Barry improves her record to 6-7 as Mustang pitcher Terra Blankenbecler moves to 7-4 on the season.

In the second game of the afternoon, the Mustangs produced eight runs over seven innings of play, answered by two runs by the Broncos. Santa Clara's two runs came in the bottom of the fourth and were scored by Melanie Barker and Werner.

Cal Poly won the game with three runs in the first inning.

Deanna Rodriguez moves to 4-9 on the season, as Jennifer Graver splits her record at 3-3.

The Broncos remain at home and will host and doubleheader with Portland State on March 25 at Marsalli Park. The twinbill is scheduled to begin at Noon.
