Softball Opens WISL with Losses to San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team opened up conference play with losses to San Diego, falling 8-1 in the opening contest and 2-1 in the follow-up. The Broncos are now 11-22 on the year, 0-2 in the Women's Independent Softball League. San Diego improves to 12-24, 2-0.

San Diego won the first game with eight runs off 11 hits and two SCU errors, with Bronco senior pitcher Krista Barry taking the loss and moving to 7-9 on the season.

Both Bronco errors occurred in the third inning when the Toreros scored five runs to blow the game open.

Santa Clara's lone score came in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore Jenée Cline singled to right field and advanced to third when freshman Lauren Fissori reached after being hit by a pitch and senior Melanie Barker walked. Junior Sydney Wiginton reached base on an error by Torero shortstop Kirsten Adair, brining Cline home.

The second game was a much closer affair and Santa Clara came out early offensively. Junior Kristi Harrington was walked with one out in the top of the first. The next two batters, sophomores Tracie Hall and Roni Rivera, were hit by pitches to load the bases. A wild pitch brought Harrington home.

San Diego scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third to hand Bronco junior pitcher Deanna Rodriguez a loss to move her record to 2-12 on the year.

The Broncos remain in San Diego and will visit San Diego State tomorrow at 1 p.m.
