Softball Drops Two Conference Games

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team fell twice to San Diego this afternoon in WISL action at Marsalli Park. Game scores were 6-2 and 5-1 to drop the Broncos' record to 11-28 on the season, 0-4 in conference play. The Toreros improve to 15-27.

Conditions were wet and cold as rain delayed the start of each game by 10 minutes. San Diego opened an early lead with two goals in the first inning, scored by Cristina Byrne and Stephanie Bisera. The Broncos countered with their own score in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Tracie Hall's first triple of the season brought in junior Sydney Wiginton.

The Toreros regained a two-run lead with another score in the second as Bisera's double brought in Byrne, who had reached base on balls. San Diego capped of the first game's scoring with three more runs in the fourth, with singles by Byrne and Bisera and a triple by Anne Skidmore. A fourth straight hit, this time by Jennifer Delpit, scored Skidmore.

San Diego finished with eight hits in the game and gave pitcher Liz Wells her first victory of the season. Bronco pitcher Deanna Rodriguez took the loss to move to 4-15 on the season. The Broncos scattered five hits through the contest.

Wiginton opened the second contest with the Broncos second triple of the day. She promptly scored on a wild pitch by Torero pitcher Alison Williams. Santa Clara's lead was brief, as San Diego scored two runs in the third on three hits, including a double to right center by Bisera. The Toreros added three more runs in the fourth to close out the scoring, highlighted by a triple from Jade Quentin.

Williams improved to 4-6 on the mound this season while senior Krista Barry moves to 7-12. San Diego outhit the Broncos in the second contest 10-5.

The Broncos remain at home and will host another midweek doubleheader next Wednesday, April 11, when San Jose State visits Marsalli Park. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
