BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 4 California Golden Bears swept the Santa Clara Broncos in a mid-week doubleheader, 8-1 and 2-0. The Bears used 12 hits in game one and another six in the nightcap to help improve their record to 47-8 overall. With the two losses, the Broncos fall to 14-33 on the year.
The Bears spent little time getting on the board in game one. With the bases loaded in the first, Courtney Scott singled up the middle, driving in Candace Harper from third after she doubled earlier in the inning and moved to third on a pair of walks by Veronica Nelson and Paige Bowie.
Back-to-back two-out doubles by Scott and Eryn Manahan in the bottom of the third resulted in Cal taking a 2-0 lead.
Santa Clara got a pair of singles to lead off the fourth by junior Kristi Harrington and sophomore Tracie Hall. Junior Deanna Rodriguez then sacrificed the runners up one base and a single by sophomore Coresta Salas cut the Cal lead in half, 2-1, but that would be all that SCU would score in the game.
Cal answered the Bronco's run and then some in its half of the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits. Harper, Nelson and Bowie each drove in a run in the inning to give Cal a 5-1 lead.
The Bears plated an unearned run in the fifth and two more in the sixth on a two-run homer by Nelson to take the eventual final, 8-1.
Forest pitched six innings of one-run three-hit ball with eight strikeouts to earn the win and improve to 25-5 on the season. Deering pitched a scoreless seventh in a non-save opportunity.
Rodriguez took the loss for SCU, pitching the first five innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits with one strikeout. Freshman Jenny Rivera pitched the final inning, allowing two runs on three hits and one strikeout.
Game two began similar to game one. Morley led off the first with a single to left and moved all the way around to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dueñas. Morley later came in to score on a Harper sacrifice fly to deep right-center field, giving the Bears an early one-run lead.
Nelson did it again in the fourth. With no one on base, no outs and a 3-2 count, Nelson sent a shot to deep left-center field, clearing the wall with ease for her 18th homer on the season, giving Cal an insurance run for the eventual 2-0 final. Nelson's roundtripper gives her 18 on the year, adding to her single-season home run record as well as the Cal career homer record (32).
After a leadoff single by SCU junior Sydney Wiginton to open the game, Cal's Nicole DiSalvio got the next 21 batters out in order to win her 17th decision with only three losses. DiSalvio also fanned four Bronco batters.
Senior Krista Barry (two runs on six hits and a walk) took the loss for Santa Clara, falling to 8-15 on the year.
The Broncos return to action next Friday, May 4, with a non-conference doubleheader at Cal Poly. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in San Luis Obispo.
