Santa Clara Women's Soccer Defeats No. 23 Maryland 4-2

STANFORD, Calif. - The 19th-ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team defeated No. 23 Maryland 4-2 this evening at New Maloney Field, opening play at the Stanford Classic.

With the victory, the Broncos improve to 4-2-0.

Senior Kathleen Celio scored four minutes into the game for her sixth goal of the season. It also marked the third straight game in which she has netted the ball.

Senior Megan Horvath scored her first goal of the season midway through the first half, while freshman Veronica Zepeda posted her second straight game-winner at the 51:41 mark. Senior Rachel Weber added her third goal of the season for insurance.

Katie Ludwig scored both goals for the Terrapins, but Maryland's record drops to 4-3-0 with the loss.

Santa Clara outshot Maryland 13-4 and limited the Terrapins to only one shot in the second half.

The Classic concludes play on Sunday afternoon, when Santa Clara plays No. 15 Virginia at 11 a.m.
