Women's Soccer Upsets No. 5 Stanford 4-2

Sept. 22, 2000

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Senior forward Kathleen Celio scored two goals to lead the 19th-ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team in an upset over fifth-ranked Stanford 4-2 tonight at the adidas Bay Area Classic, held at San Jose State's Spartan Stadium.

With the victory, the Broncos improve to 5-3-0. Stanford falls to 5-2-0.

Celio scored at the 7:35 mark by following up on a shot from freshman Veronica Zepeda. Twenty minutes later, Zepeda assisted on sophomore Aly Wagner's first goal on the season, when Wagner took a through ball to the right side of the net. Right before the end of the half, Zepeda scored the eventual game-winner, netting toward the back post after taking a low cross from fellow freshman Kristi Candau. It was Zepeda's third straight game-winner.

Four minutes into the second period, Celio scored again, heading the ball into the net off of senior Heather Aldama's free kick. It was Celio's team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Stanford then posted goals by Christy LaPierre and Marcia Wallis to round out the scoring.

Santa Clara will play again at the adidas Bay Area Classic, taking on 11th-ranked and undefeated (8-0) California on Sunday at 3 p.m. The Bears, 4-0 winners over San Jose State earlier this evening, will be Santa Clara's sixth straight ranked opponent.
