Santa Clara Women's Soccer Ties No. 11 California in Overtime

SAN JOSE, Calif. - After two overtimes, the 19th-ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team tied 11th-ranked California 1-1 this afternoon at the adidas Bay Area Classic, held at San Jose State's Spartan Stadium.

The Broncos' record moves to 5-3-1, while California is now 8-0-1.

Sophomore Devvyn Hawkins scored her first goal of the season 34 minutes into the match, taking a cross from senior Heather Aldama. An assist was also awarded to freshman Veronica Zepeda.

California countered early in the second half, when the Bears' Laura Schott scored during the 48th minute.

Seven yellow cards were issued during this physical match, six of which went to the Broncos, although California out-fouled Santa Clara 26-22.

The Broncos saw many opportunities, outshooting the Bears 22-5, with a 10-1 shots-on-goal advantage.

Aldama was named the tournament's outstanding defensive player while Hawkins, Zepeda, senior Kathleen Celio and sophomore Aly Wagner were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Santa Clara returns home next weekend to host the Santa Clara adidas Classic, Sept. 29 and Oct. 1, at Buck Shaw Stadium. On Friday, fifth-ranked Stanford will play No. 14 Wake Forest at 6 p.m., followed by Weber State and the Broncos at 8 p.m. Sunday's matchups include Stanford and Weber State at noon, and Santa Clara and Wake Forest at 2 p.m.
