Softball Falls to UCSB 2-0

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team fell to host UC Santa Barbara 2-0 to close tournament play at the "Softball by the Beach" Invitational, played at Elings Park. The Broncos went 0-5 at the tournament to fall to 7-11 on the season. UCSB improved to 10-12.

Junior Roni Rivera recorded the Broncos' only hit of the day, a single up the middle in the second inning. Senior Deanna Rodriguez took the loss on the mound.

Gaucho Loren Thornburg earned the win en route to her third shutout of the season, pushing her record to 5-6 for the year. UCSB Leslie Simien went 3-for-4 in the game, giving her a tournament-high seven hits.

Sixth-ranked Cal won the tournament, going 5-0 on the weekend.

"We are very disappointed with the results of the weekend, coaches and players alike" head coach Marcy Crouch said, "but we're still really motivated and looking forward to a good week of practice before we head toward our next challenge, a ranked team in Fresno State on Saturday."

Santa Clara returns to action on March 2, visiting 17th-ranked Fresno State for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
