SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Mother nature played havoc on the Santa Clara University softball team's opening day of action at the 15th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic, hosted by San Diego State University at the newly-opened SDSU Softball Stadium. Rain showers forced the tournament schedule to be revised Friday morning and it also shortened the Broncos' second contest of the day, a 2-0 loss to Central Michigan.
The Chippewas scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the fifth inning, and added another run in the sixth, but that frame was never completed as the game was called due to the weather. Since the teams did complete five innings, the contest favored CMU 2-0 and the Broncos fall to 6-6 on the season.
CMU scored its runs off relief pitcher Sara Overmier, who came on in the top of the fifth. Christan Dhondt walked with one out and was replaced by Katie Horvath as a pinch runner, who then stole second. A Bronco throwing error for the next Chippewa batter allowed Horvath to score and Stephanie Crews to advance to third. A sacrifice fly to center by Brittany Fulks completed the scoring.
Vanessa Werner, Kate Goethals and Shannon Linerud each recorded hits for the Broncos.
Jessica Garvin earned the victory in the circle for Central Michigan, allowing three hits and fanning six. Santa Clara used three pitchers in five innings, and Overmier took the loss. The Broncos left five runners on base.
Santa Clara continues action at the tournament with two games on Saturday: Georgia at noon and Florida International at 5 p.m. The Broncos will close participation at this event with a 1 p.m. Sunday game against Oregon State, who is currently ranked 19th in the country.
