Softball Splits at Fall Tournament

Nov. 6, 2004

STANFORD, Calif. - The Santa Clara University softball team participated in a fall tournament today, hosted by Stanford at the Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Broncos opened the day with an 8-4 victory over West Valley College, and fell to the host Cardinal 8-0 in the afternoon.

Santa Clara's offense was strong in the first game. Angela Kabanuck notched a triple and two RBIs, while Shannon Linerud posted three RBIs and Jessica Clee went 2-3 on the day with 2 RBIs. Sabrina Franks recorded a double in her first collegiate at bat, taking the ball over the left fielder with two outs on the board.

Liz Courter led the Bronco defense in the circle, striking out five and allowing two hits and one unearned run. Jerrica Castagno closed out the game, posting four Ks in her collegiate debut.

Head Coach Jaime Forman-Lau said the contest against Stanford wasn't as lopsided as the score suggests and that her team did many things right. Franks posted a no-out single with one person on in the sixth inning for the team's only hit of the game and finished 2-3 on the day. Castagno pitched four innings and Sara Overmier closed out the game.

Santa Clara will play both teams again on Sunday to close out participation in the tournament and conclude the fall training season.
