Junior Jerrica Castagno will give weekly commentary right here throughout the softball team's 2007 season as part of the new Bronco Blogs feature on santaclarabroncos.com. With 2007 finally here, Castagno will give Bronco fans an inside view of what it is like to be a student-athlete at Santa Clara.

Castagno returns to the diamond for her junior year after having her 2006 season cut short by a season-ending injury. After a strong offseason, Jerrica is set to lead the Broncos in 2007 as Santa Clara contends for the Pacific Coast Softball Conference title.

hey everyone!!

Sorry I have been MIA...school and softball are taking over my life right now! Between finals and traveling I feel like im never here!  softball is off to a rough start, but don't worry we're just saving up all of our wins for conference!  Apparently I was Pitcher of the Week 3 weeks ago, but my coach just found out today! Angela Kabanuck (our center fielder) was nominated as the Player of the Week for this past week.  She went 14 for 24.  She's on fire right now!

Finals are next week and I have about 35 pages worth of papers to write so I better get going.  We're off to Sacramento this weekend for the Sac State tournament.  Wish us luck!  You'll definately be hearing from me when we get back and after finals are over.

Ciao!

Hey everyone! sorry I haven't written in awhile, but we've been on the road a lot and I have been super busy.  Season is finally underway, but we haven't had the best start.  We played a good game against Stanford last weekend, but unfortunately we came out with the loss.  We ended up losing 4-3, but it was one of our strongest games.  Unfortunately, between this weekends tourny and last weekends tourny in Cal Poly, we now have 2 girls on crutches (Jenn and Breann). Breann has a slight tear in her MCL. She hurt it sliding into second during our game in Cal Poly, and Jenn tore her PCL when she tripped running to first base in our game this past weekend at Stanford.  Hopefully those are the last of the injuries this year on our team.

Speaking of injuries, Maggie Godfrey has decided to give up her redshirt this year and come back and be our designated hitter now that Jenn is hurt.  She won't be able to catch, but she is allowed to hit.  She has definately recovered a lot quicker from her shoulder surgery than I did last year.  Our team is really excited to have Maggie back on the field.  Today was her first day at practice, it was actually really weird to see her in full uniform out on the field!  It's definately a good thing though.

Other than softball, everything else is going well.  Last night a bunch of my teammates and I went to California Pizza Kitchen with a couple of the guys on the baseball team.  It was a lot of fun!  Other than that we've been going to as many baseball games as we can (due to our game conflicts).  On Saturday night after our games at Stanford, our whole team went to the Men's Basketball game because it was their last home game and it was senior night.  It was a really good game and of course we beat USD!

This weekend we are off to Santa Barbara for another tournament.  Wish us luck!  You'll be hearing from me as soon as we get back.

Ciao!

Hi everyone! Midterms are underway this week and next so ive been pretty busy. I took my stats midterm today and have 2 papers due next monday and tuesday. It's going to be a crazy weekend trying to write 2 papers and play 5 games, but I am soooo excited to actually play a game! It will be almost 11 months exactly since I've pitched in a game. I was shut down last year on March 9th at Stanford because of shoulder problems, then May 2 was my surgery so It's quiet an excitement that I'm starting our first game this weekend at Cal Poly against Sac State. Keep your fingers crossed that we don't get rained out because I think it is supposed to rain the entire weekend. Go figure!

Baseball season is underway finally! THe baseball team had their opening game this past weekend. They played a three game serious against the Utah Utes. Sweeping them in all three games! For their home opener on Friday night some of the girls on my team decided to go all out and make shirts for the game. They turned out soo good, especially for making them on our own! Their was 11 of us who wore them to the game. The guys' parents loved them! THe fronts said SCU Baseball and on the back we each wore one of the guys numbers with either their last names or their nicknames. I wore #24, Matt Long's number (center fielder). The guys loved them (well at least thats what they said!) They ended up killing the Utes 8-0 so it was a good game to go to!

Besides watching baseball all weekend, on Saturday night I went home (Redwood City) and helped my parents work a Crab Feed Fundraiser for the Athletic Department at my high school. It was a fun night getting to see some of my old teachers, coaches, and a few of my friends' parents. I can't believe I have already been out of high school for 3 years. Man does time fly!

Tonight was the annual Endowment Dinner for the Bronco Bench. THis year it was at the Valenica Hotel in Santana Row. It was so nice! It's basically a dinner held for the donors to the Bronco Bench Foundation for athletic scholarships. There were about 80 student-athletes at the dinner. It was a time to mingle with fellow athletes, donors, and the athletic department faculty, as well as to thank the donors for their thoughtful donations and helping make it possible for us to attend Santa Clara. Three of us from our team went, Jackie (Morales), Lauren (Passafuime), and I went as well as our coach (Steve Rianda). We were split up and assigned tables for dinner. I sat at a table with Jackie, Domineek, Josh (2 of the basketball guys), Noelle and Veronica (2 of the girls from the cross country team), the Cross Country Coach, as well as two donors, Mr and Mrs. Manifre. We had an amazing dinner! We started off with a salad, our entree was chicken and salmon with rice and vegetables, followed by desert. Each athlete had to come up to the podium and introduce ourselves. All in all it was a fun night. They did an awesome job this year planning the event.

Well its time to get to bed, I have to get up early tomorrow to take my history quiz in the morning since I am going to miss it on Friday due to our tournament in Cal Poly. Wish us luck and pray for no rain! Don't forget we have our home opener next Tuesday, the 13th. We open up against Fresno so it's going to be a good game.

Have a good weekend,

Jerrica

Hey everyone! Practice is underway with a week and a half left before our first game.  We started off practicing our first day back from christmas break.  Our day started off with a lovely conditioning session at 4:45 in the morning. Sounds nuts, doesn't it? Well yea it was! We ran outside and I'm pretty sure it was about 20 degrees each morning.  It was horrible!  Thank god it only lasted for a week.  It was our "help" week to get us ready to practice and inshape for games.  Other than that, we have weights from 2-3 everyday and practice from 3-5/5:30 afterwards 5 days a week.  On the weekends we haven't been practicing too much because we have been traveling around hosting softball camps for local youth softball leaugues on Saturdays and Sundays.  It's so much fun, the little girls are the cutest things ever!  I know it sounds like we do so much! Well, it doesn't stop there.  After going to class in the morning, weights and practice in the afternoons, about 2 or 3 times a month we work the San Jose Sharks games as a fundraiser because we're trying to raise enough money to build a field for us to play on because right now we play on a community field down the street.  The Sharks games are a lot of fun, we work concession stands and serve food and drinks, but it's a long night.  We usually get there at about 4:30 and usually don't leave until about 11.  We actually have to work one tonight!

Other than school and softball, last week Me, Maggie (junior catcher), Jackie (junior utilities), Noelani (soph. first baseman), and Meghan (junior middle infielder) decided to take a little roadtrip on our day off up to USF to see the men's basketball game.  We had a little karaoke session in the car on the way up since it took us about an hour and half to get there thanks to traffic.  It was such a fun night!  We went up a little early and went to Haight Street and had dinner together and then headed over for the game that started at 7.  Calvin, Dom and Joey (3 of the basketball players) were nice and put us all on the pass list so we got in for free.  So that was pretty sweet.

Well I'm off to study hall before practice to get a little studying done since midterms started this week,  catch ya next week before we head down to Cal Poly for a season opener on Thursday.

Bye!!!
