SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team wrapped up the Mustang Classic Sunday against tournament host Cal Poly. The Broncos did their best to stay in the game, but the big inning hurt them, and Cal Poly won the game 8-0 in five innings. The Broncos (0-4) will be looking for their first win(s) of the season Tuesday when they host Fresno State at Marsalli Park at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Sunday afternoon, the Broncos started off in good shape. After stranding a couple of baserunners in the top of the 1st, Jerrica Castagno retired the Mustangs in order in the bottom of the inning. Again in the 2nd, the Broncos had a shot at some runs, after Noelani Hoopii hit a one-out double. In the bottom of the 2nd, Castagno struck out two in a row, and then retired a third after giving up a walk.
But after that, despite the Broncos success at putting the ball in play, batted balls seemed to find Cal Poly infielders instead of the gaps. And in the third, the Mustangs put the pressure on with two down. Five consecutive batters came around to score what ended up as a six-run inning.
In the fourth, two hits and an error were all the Mustangs needed to get two more runs, placing them at the eight-run milestone. After another tough inning at the plate for the Broncos, the game was called after five innings.
