Castagno's Complete Game Shutout Leads Broncos To First Victory Of 2007

SANTA BARBARA, Calif - The Santa Clara softball team got their first win of the season Saturday against the University of Texas-San Antonio at the UCSB Mini Tournament in Santa Barbara, Calif. Another solid effort by Jerrica Castagno and some key hits propelled the Broncos to a 3-0 complete game shutout.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when junior Meghan Chavez led off with a home run, her first of the season. The Broncos added a second run thanks to a singles by Angela Kabanuck and Jackie Morales.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Broncos added one more insurance run. Three consecutive singles by Noelani Hoopii, Kaitlyn Rauschnot and Chavez. Chavez was 2-for-2 and had two RBIs in the victory.

Castagno was solid for the Broncos, and retired the last 15 of 17 batters, including a strikeout to end the ballgame.

The Broncos were near perfect on defense after getting their lone error of the game out of the way with the first batter of the game. On offense, the Broncos out-hit Texas-San Antonio by a 6-3 margin.

The Broncos will conclude play in the UCSB Mini Tournament with two matches against host UCSB Sunday.
