MORAGA, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team got their doubleheader with St. Mary's started on a rough note, falling to the Gaels 10-1 in six innings. Despite two strong offensive performances on Friday, Santa Clara was unable to get anything going offensively, scoring just one run in the bottom of the first inning and compiling just three hits, while St. Mary's posted 14 hits.

Jackie Morales got the start for Santa Clara who gave up two runs in the top of the first inning after two singles, a walk and a double. In the bottom of the inning, however, the Broncos got one back after Nori Kamada walked, advanced on a fielders choice, stole a base and then scored on an error. After the end of the first the score was 2-1, and that was as close as the Broncos would get.

Morales held the Gaels scoreless in the second, but in the third, an error by secondbaseman Breann Netto followed by two consecutive singles increased the Gaels lead to 3-1. The Broncos tried to respond, and Kamada doubled to right-center but was unable to score.

Then in the fourth, the Gaels sent all nine batters to the plate. A single and an error set the table for the innings first home run, a three run shot increasing the deficit to 6-1. Two batters later, the Gaels would go deep again, this time a two run home run to make the score 8-1, forcing Morales to hand off the ball to Jerrica Castagno, who got the Broncos out of the inning without another run.

Castagno pitched her way out of the fifth inning without giving up a run, but in the sixth, the Gaels got the all-important ninth and tenth runs. A solo home run with one out put St. Mary's over the eight-run barrier before they added another to account for the final 10-1 margin.

The Broncos (8-34, 1-2) have one more game this afternoon with St. Mary's.
