Sixth Inning The Difference As Santa Clara Falls To Cal Poly

STANFORD, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's softball team fell to Cal Poly this morning, 7-4, in the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic. After taking a two-run lead in the third, the Broncos surrendered the winning run in the top of the sixth inning and couldn't mount a comeback in the seventh, dropping their third game of the weekend.

After allowing a run in the first inning, senior pitcher Kaitlyn Rauschnot struck out two in the top of the second inning. In the bottom of the inning, junior catcher Amanda Edmonson led the inning off with a double and after a stolen base, junior outfielder Jackie Nicora scored Edmonson with a sacrifice bunt.

The Bronco defense held the Mustangs scoreless in the third, and took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning when freshman short stop Jamie Wallis scored on an error by the Cal Poly short stop and Edmonson had her second big hit of the day, a triple, to score sophomore Catherine Surane who had reached on a single.

The Mustangs tied the game in the fifth inning and took a 4-3 lead in the sixth. Santa Clara was retired with one runner left on base in both the fifth and the sixth.

In the seventh inning, errors plagued the Broncos and allowed Cal Poly to score three runs. In the bottom of the inning, Santa Clara got two hits and scored one, but the rally was cut short on a fly-out for the final out of the game.

The Broncos, now 5-12 overall, will wrap up the Stanford Louisville Slugger Classic tomorrow with their fourth and final game of the season against Princeton at 9 a.m.
