SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Santa Clara softball team finished off its series with Sacramento State today with a 16-0 loss, handing the series sweep to the Hornets after the final game of the set was postponed on April 11 due to adverse weather conditions.

This is the second loss of a six-game week for Santa Clara, who fell yesterday to No. 13 California in Berkeley. The Broncos return to West Valley College this weekend to begin their final home Pacific Coast Softball Conference series, taking on Saint Mary's with the first doubleheader of the weekend set to begin at noon on Saturday.

Sac State's bats were just too much for Santa Clara to handle, as the Hornets scored nine runs on eight hits, none of them home runs, in a disastrous first inning for the Broncos.

Santa Clara would never recover, managing only two hits off Sac State starting pitcher Megan Schaefer and none off her replacement Shelby Voelz. Freshman Jamie Wallis singled in the team's second at-bat in the first inning and junior Jenna Fong also singled in the second inning.

The Hornets hung two other crooked numbers on the scoreboard, scoring two runs in the fourth inning and five in the fifth.

The Broncos fall to 9-27 overall and 1-11 in the PCSC with the loss. Santa Clara will be looking to get back into winning form on Saturday against the Gaels, who are currently second in the PCSC Coastal Division at 21-18 overall and 7-3 in conference.

Sunday's game against Saint Mary's will serve as Senior Day for the team's four seniors, Kaitlyn Rauschnot, Emily Batt, Nicole Picard, and Megan Smith. Admission to the game is free, but parking at West Valley College is $2 per car. West Valley College is located at 14000 Fruitvale Ave. in Saratoga, Calif. The WVC softball campus is located on the southeast side of the campus.
