SURREY, B.C. - Santa Clara University's Jaymi Bautista-Geiger
hit .462 with three doubles, while striking out 22 batters in 24
innings inside the circle at the 2012 Scotiabank Canadian Open
Fastpitch International Championship at Softball City in Surrey,
British Columbia.
Bautista-Geiger (Gainesville, Fla.) was representing Peru's
national team in games against Mexico, Great Britain, Indonesia and
China, among others. She met her teammates in Surrey for practice
and exhibition games prior to the tournament beginning June 30.
"The whole environment of the tournament is great," said
Bautista-Geiger. "There are so many international teams here, and a
lot of great softball. Plus, Surrey and the surrounding towns are
really into softball, so tons of people come to watch. I really
love the crowds."
Bautista-Geiger – in her fourth year in Peru's national team
system - made the trip to represent the country's U19 squad last
season. She made the move up to the Peruvian National Team in 2012.
She pitched and won Peru's opening game against Team British
Columbia (Team BC), throwing a complete game, fanning eight and
allowing just two runs in a 3-2 victory. She also doubled and
walked offensively.
"Rain altered the schedule a bit and our opening game started at
almost 10 p.m.," said Bautista-Geiger. "However, we won 3-2,
in a total team effort. My teammates really came through for me.
They put one run across in the fourth, then two more in the sixth.
They never gave up and really wanted to win. It was a great way to
start the tournament!"
"Something else that I enjoyed is that the hotel we stayed at was
completely filled with other teams. Teams like Great Britain,
China, Indonesia, Ecuador, Mexico, Brazil, and two other travel
teams. Lunch and dinner time is interesting because everyone is
downstairs all together."
Peru picked up an additional pool play victory over Indonesia
before falling to Mexico and China in the tournament finals July 7.
