Bronco Softball Drops Pair Saturday at Stanford's Nike Invitational
2013 Stanford Nike Invitational Tournament

PALO ALTO, Calif. -
The Santa Clara University softball team was denied its first win of the season after falling to Cal State Northridge 5-0 and UC Davis 7-2 on Saturday at the 2013 Stanford Nike Invitational Tournament.

Junior all-conference outfielder Stephanie Fisher (Tracy, Calif. / Tracy) went 3 for 5 on the day for the Broncos, which included a solo homerun against UC Davis, but Santa Clara (0-5) could not find a way to push across enough runs despite totaling 12 hits in the two games.

In the afternoon affair with UC Davis (4-3), the Broncos out-hit the Aggies 8 to 6. However, the Aggies scored four times in the bottom of the second inning and plated three more runs in the third to take a commanding 7-1 lead and hand SCU senior Carissa Theis (San Jose, Calif. / Leigh) her second loss of the young season.

Just two of the six runs allowed by Theis were earned. SCU committed three fielding errors to help out UC Davis' offense. The Aggies did get a double and two RBI from leadoff hitter Cassandra Ginnis. Shortstop Chrisa Castello went 2 for 3 and scored two runs.

In the morning game, Cal State Northridge (3-7) got a three-run homer from catcher Mikayla Thielges as part of a four-run third inning, which proved to be the difference. True freshman starting pitcher Ciara Gonzales (Chandler, Ariz. / Mountain Pointe) had shutout the Matadors through two innings, keeping the game at 0-0 before Northridge plated four runs in the third.

The Broncos offense went without an extra-base hit in Saturday morning's game with Northridge. In all SCU had four singles, one by Fisher and one apiece from Kelly Scribner (Loveland, Colo. / Mountain View), Rochelle Rivera (Westminster, Calif. / Fountain Valley) and Jordan Newell (San Bruno, Calif. / St. Ignatius College Prep)

Junior left-handed pitcher Briana Rios (Modesto, Calif. / Central Catholic), pictured above, worked three scoreless innings in relief against UC Davis and junior classmate Jessica Turner (Tulsa, Ok. / Broken Arrow) was effective in three-plus innings of relief against Northridge.

SCU will play UC Davis again on Sunday at 12:15 p.m. to wrap up its three-game weekend at the Nike Invitational at Smith Family Field in Palo Alto.
