2013 SCU Bronco Classic Tournament Page

SANTA CLARA, Calif. –
Santa Clara University's softball team was in position to pick up its first win of the year Friday afternoon at its own SCU Bronco Classic, shutting out Cal State Northridge through five innings before the Matadors rallied for a 7-3 victory. The Broncos had already dropped a 5-0 decision to Fresno State in the tournament opener.

After the two losses, Santa Clara (0-8) will now turn its focus to Sunday, when the Broncos host Idaho State and St. Mary's at 10:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. as part of the three-day tournament schedule

Cal State Northridge (5-9) had been shutout 5-0 by San Jose State earlier in the day over at SJSU Field and SCU junior right-hander Jessica Turner (Tulsa, Ok. / Broken Arrow) was cruising through five innings against the Matadors. However, a costly fielding error in the sixth inning gave CSUN new life, eventually turning a 2-0 SCU lead into a 6-2 deficit.

Stephanie Fisher (Tracy, Calif. / Tracy) - who is now batting a team-best .455 on the season (10 for 22) - hit an RBI double to left-centerfield for Santa Clara in the first inning to give the Broncos an early lead against CSUN. Fisher and junior classmate Rochelle Rivera (Westminster, Calif. / Fountain Valley) singled in the third inning to generate another SCU run via a sacrifice fly from Jamie Wallis (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook).

Leading 2-0 with two outs and one on in the sixth, a single by CSUN's Maylynn Mitchell (Covington, Wash. /Mt. Rainer) put the Matadors on the scoreboard. Needing just one more out to end the inning and give SCU a one-run edge heading into the final frame, a throwing error extended the inning and four more Matadors would reach safely - highlighted by Mikayla Thielges (Las Vegas, Nev. / Silverado) three-run double to break it open, 6-2.

SCU received some outstanding defensive play from second baseman Krista Jensen (San Jose, Calif. / Presentation), who also hit an RBI double as the Broncos tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh.

In the morning game, Fresno State (8-7) got a two-run homer from first baseman Stesha Brazil (Turlock, Calif. / U. of Houston) in the fifth and 3 for 4 day from leadoff hitter Brenna Moss (Bakersfield, Calif. / North) to beat the Broncos 5-1.

Shortstop Jordan Newell (San Bruno, Calif. / St. Ignatius College Prep) enjoyed a career-best three-hit game against Fresno State. Kelly Scribner (Loveland, Colo. / Mountain View) went 2 for 3 and on the day, SCU and Fresno State were even with eight hits apiece.
