Bronco Softball Shutouts UCSB in Extra Innings

Santa Clara, Calif. – Carissa Thies notched her first win of the season pitching eight shutout innings and the Broncos snapped a nine-game losing steak with a 1-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Friday afternoon. The Broncos improved to 3-18 with the walk off win while dropping the Gauchos to 17-8. The teams will play a double header Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.

"I feel like everything was going my way today, " said Theis (1-6), who allowed five hits with four strikeouts and a walk in the complete game victory. "It was just a really good day."

Shelby Wisdom (11-6) took the loss for UCSB allowing four hits with five strikeouts and an unearned run in 7.2 innings.

The Broncos walked off with the win when Krista Jensen scored on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jamie Wallis stroked her second single of the day leading off the frame and advanced to second on an attempted sacrifice bunt by Jensen.

Both runners were safe when Wisdom threw late to second base for attempted force out. Pinch hitter Vanessa Leija grounded into a fielders choice with Wallis being forced at third.

Jaymi Bautista-Geiger then lined a shot up the middle that second baseman Kathryn Pilpil fielded and stepped on the base to force Leija, but the return throw to first in an attempt for the inning-ending double play skipped past Lauren Boser allowing Jensen to score the winning run.

Stephanie Fisher doubled and singled in three plate appearances.  Fisher and Wallis accounted for all four of the Broncos' hits.
