Bronco Softball Scores Early but Falls to Boston

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – On a cold and rainy day, Santa Clara softball feel to Boston University by a final of 8-4. The loss puts the Broncos at 0-9 while the Terriers are now 4-2.

Due to rain delaying the second end of a double header for Santa Clara, the schedule of games for tomorrow, Sat., March 1 will change. Games will now begin at 11 a.m. with Santa Clara vs. Seattle and games at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. will follow.

Jessica Turner (0-5) started for Santa Clara and got the loss in 5.1 innings. Turner allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts. Breezy Bernard was 3-4 with a double, a run scored, and a RBI to lead the offense. Kelly Scribner was 2-4 with a double and a run scored while Cassandra Padilla was 2-3.

Lauren Hynes (1-0) started for Boston and got the win in the complete game. Hynes allowed four runs on 10 hits with one strikeout. Amy Ekart was 2-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the offense. Brittany Clendenny was 1-3 with a double, two RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base while Mandy Fernandez was 3-4 with a run scored.

The Broncos struck first with four runs in the bottom of the second. Scribner singled to right and Bernard followed with a double to right center to knock her in. Jordan Newell followed with a double of her own and Krista Jensen hit a two-RBI single to left. After a walk and a fielder's choice, Stephanie Fisher singled up the middle to make the score 4-0 Broncos.

Boston scored in the top of the fourth to make the score 4-1 Santa Clara. Hynes led off with a walk and after a fielder's choice, another walk put two on with two out. Jayme Mask double down the left field line for the first run of the game for the Terriers.

A four-spot in the top of the fifth put Boston on top for the first time. Chelsea Kehr doubled to left to start the inning but the next two batters went down on fly balls to centerfield. Hynes drew a walk and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Ekart hit a two-RBI single up the middle to get Boston within one. With runners on second and third and two down, a run came in on an error and Moriah Connolly singled to center to make the score 5-4.

Boston would add three more runs in the top of the sixth and hold on for the 8-4 win.
