SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Playing a doubleheader due to rain the previous day, Santa Clara softball lost to Seattle by a final of 7-3 and beat UC Davis 5-4. The Broncos are now 1-10 on the season while the Redhawks are 7-11 and the Aggies are 5-14.
Santa Clara returns to the field tomorrow, Sun., March 2 at 3 p.m. vs. Seattle in the final game of the 2014 Santa Clara Marriott Invitational
Game 1
Jessica Turner (0-5) started for Santa Clara and picked up a loss in 3.0 innings. Turner allowed three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Krista Jensen was 2-3 with two doubles and a run scored to lead the offense. Cassandra Padilla was 2-3 with a RBI while Geenamarie Bonilla was 1-3 with a RBI and a run scored.
Mandie Sugita (1-3) started for Seattle and picked up a win in 5.1 innings. Sugita allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Alyssa Reuble got her first save of the season in 1.2 shutout innings of relief with a strikeout. Brianna Guerrero was 4-5 with three doubles and two RBI to lead the offense. Jenny Hurst was 2-4 with a home run, a double, and three RBI while Sugita was 2-3 with a double and two runs scored.
Seattle put up a three-spot in the top of the second to take the lead. Sugita walked to lead off the inning but was still on first after two quick outs. Isabella Geronimo singled to left and Hurst followed with a three-run home run. Guerrero followed with a double and Turner was lifted for Brianna Rios. Rios got a strikeout to end the inning.
The Redhawks put up a single run in the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth. In the fifth, after the first two batters made outs, Sugita doubled to left and pinch-hitter Karina Smyth singled to right center to bring in the run. After a walk, Geronimo singled to left field off new Santa Clara pitcher Ciara Gonzales to make the score 6-0 Seattle.
The Broncos scored in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-1. After the first out was made, Santa Clara loaded the bases with singles from Gianetta France and Padilla and a walk to Taylor Bojorquez. Amanda Delfino hit into a ground out to bring in the Bronco run.
In the bottom of the sixth Santa Clara put up two runs to make the score 6-3. Jensen hit a one out double and Bonilla followed with a RBI single to center. Bonilla stole second and with two outs, Padilla singled her in.
Seattle scored an insurance run in the seventh and the Broncos went down in order in the seventh to give the Redhawks the win.
Game 2
Kimberly Goulart (0-0) started for Santa Clara and picked up a no-decision in 3.1 innings. Brianna Rios (1-3) got the win in 3.0 perfect innings of relief. Jordan Newell was 2-3 with a double, a RBI, and a run scored to lead the offense. Stephanie Fisher was 1-4 with a double and two RBI while Kelly Scribner was 1-2 with a walk.
Marissa Chapa (0-1) got the loss for Davis in 4.2 innings of relief while giving up one run on four hits. Lauryn Saunders was 2-3 with a double and three RBI to lead the offense. Kelly Zboralske was 2-3 with a triple and two runs scored while Krista Bava added a RBI.
Davis scored first in the second inning on a triple and a single but Goulart came right back with three outs to escape the inning.
Newell doubled to right-center with one down in the bottom of the second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Bonilla followed with a single to center to tie the game. Goulart pinch-hit and singled down the right field line to put two on with one out. Padilla doubled in a run and Fisher followed with a two-RBI single to left-center that made the score 4-1.
In the top of the fourth, the first two batters reached before L Saunders doubled down the right field line to bring in both runners. Bava smacked a home run after the base runner had been erased to tie the game at 4-4.
After two were out in the bottom of the fifth, Bernard singled to center and was lifted for pinch runner Rochelle Rivera. Krista Jensen singled down the left field line to put runners on first and second. Newell knocked in a run with a RBI single to third.
Rios was able to get the Aggies in order in the top of the seventh to give Santa Clara the win.
