Broncos Drop Wild Game vs. Seattle

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In the finale of the 2014 Santa Clara Marriott Invitational, Santa Clara softball fell to Seattle in a shootout by a final of 13-11. The Broncos are now 1-11 on the season while the Redhawks are now 10-11.

Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., March 7 at 9 a.m. vs. Sacramento State at the Cal Poly Mustang Classic.

"The real positives from the weekend are that we figured out our offense and showed we can fight back in games," said Santa Clara head coach Lisa Mize. "We beat a good team in Davis so this is a good weekend to build off of even if we only got the one win. We showed a lot of fight today against a good Seattle team and if we can cut down our walks and errors we'll win these games."

Kimberly Goulart (0-0) started for Santa Clara and picked up a no-decision in 1.2 innings. Jessica Turner (0-5) got the loss in 2.0 innings out of the bullpen. Turner allowed six unearned runs on four hits. Geenamarie Bonilla was 3-4 with a double and three RBI to lead the offense. Kelly Scribner was 2-4 with a double and three runs scored while Krista Jensen was 2-3 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored.

Lindsay Davis (3-2) started for Seattle and picked up a no-decision in 2.2 innings. Mandie Sugita (3-3) got the win in 4.1 innings out of the bullpen. Sugita allowed five runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Izzy Geronimo was 4-5 with two doubles, three runs scored, and a RBI to lead the offense. Bubba Morrow was 2-4 with a walk, a run scored, and four RBI while Lisa Maulden was 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Santa Clara struck in the bottom of the first to make the score 2-0. Rochelle Rivera singled but was erased on a fielder's choice. With Scribner on first, Breezy Bernard cracked an RBI double to right-center field to score the run. Jensen followed with an RBI single to right.

Maulden floated a single over the head of the third baseman to lead off the top of the second and Kayla Gonzales walked with one down. Hayley Beckstrom hit into a fielder's choice but the runner at third was called safe to load the bases. A ground out by Jenn Sweet brought in the first Seattle run and Paige Bouska followed with an RBI single to center to tie the game 2-2. Geronimo singled through the right side to give the Redhawks their first lead of the game. Another singly by Sarah Petosa loaded the bases and ended the day for Goulart. Turner came in to pitch and gave up a two-RBI single to Morrow. The inning finally ended when the 10th batter of the inning, Maulden, grounded out to short with the score 5-2.

The Broncos loaded the bases in the bottom of the third with the help of two Seattle errors and a missed pop-up that fell in for a single. A wild pitch brought in a run for Santa Clara and Jensen hit a sac fly to center to get Santa Clara back within one run at 5-4. After Jordan Newell worked a walk in a long at-bat, she stole second but the throw went into center to allow the runner on third to score and Newell to move up. Bonilla smoked a double off the wall in center in the next at-bat to put the Broncos on top 6-5. Chiara Biagini singled to shortstop to put runners on the corners and Cassandra Padilla walked to load the bases for the top of the order. Sugita came in to pitch for Seattle and got a grounder back to the mound to escape the jam.

After two quick outs in the top of the fourth, Seattle loaded the bases with a double, a walk, and a Bronco error. Turner got ahead in the count 1-2 but Maulden hit a two-RBI single to left to put the Redhawks back on top 7-6. A walk to Jenny Hurst loaded the bases again and Gonzales singled to right but the ball got through the right fielder's legs. All three runs came in to score and Gonzales went to third. Brianna Rios came in to pitch for the Broncos and Beckstrom greeted her with an RBI double to right center. Rios got a strikeout to end the inning with the Redhawks ahead 11-6.

Santa Clara answered right back in the bottom of the fourth. With one out Scribner doubled to left center and Bernard walked before Jensen double down the left field line to knock in a run. Newell followed with a walk that loaded the bases and prompted a trip to the mound by Seattle. Bonilla knocked in two and put runners on the corners with a single up the middle. The next two batters went down on strikes to end the inning.

The Redhawks put the first two runners on in the top of the fifth with back-to-back infield singles. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and after an out was recorded, Morrow knocked in both runs with a single down the third baseline. After a walk, Rios was lifted for Ciara Gonzales who got the next two outs.

In the bottom of the seventh the first two reached for Santa Clara on singles and moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Padilla advanced both runners with a sac fly to make the score 13-10. Fisher followed with a RBI single to left but the next two batters went down to end the game.
