Kelly Scribner Discusses Her Past Four Years As A Bronco

Written by Kennedy Dinius '17

As a member of the softball team, Kelly Scribner (KS) has had many great experiences with her teammates over the past four years. In her last season, she hopes to enjoy every moment with her team and make a difference for the softball program. Although busy in the middle of her season, Scribner was able to give Santa Clara Broncos (SCB) her thoughts on how she feels about being apart of the Bronco's softball program.

SCB: Do you have any personal goals for your senior season?

KS: As my senior season begins, I have several personal goals for myself.

One of the biggest goals I have for myself is to simply enjoy my last season of playing the sport I love. I know that I will never have another opportunity to play in a competitive atmosphere, and I really want to enjoy each moment I have on the field with all of my amazing teammates. Along with this, I also want to be a part of the first step towards changing the SCU softball program. The last few years, the team has been hearing about changing the culture of SCU Softball, and I believe that this year we have a hard-working, talented team that can really be the beginning of this change. It would be an honor for me to contribute to this change.

SCB: What is something you have learned playing at SCU that helped you become a better player?

KS: Although playing at SCU has taught me many things, I believe the most important thing I have learned from my time here is perseverance. Throughout my time at Santa Clara, the softball program has been continually improving, however we have not yet seen the results we want. At the beginning of each year, it is a test of each girl's perseverance to move past the results we saw the previous season and look forward to the goals we have for the new season. When a program does not always have the best record, it can become common for people to quit or transfer, however that has never been the case at SCU since I have been here, and I know that is a testament to the perseverance and drive of all the SCU players.

SCB: What did your team do during preseason to prepare for this season?

KS: I think the main thing the team worked on this preseason was driving the ball. We really put a lot of time and effort into hitting, and I can see a huge difference. Although our first tournament did not show the offensive numbers we want, I believe that with a few more games under our belts, our bats will come alive, and everyone will be driving the ball.

SCB: What is your favorite part of being a member of the women's softball team at SCU?

KS: My favorite part of being a member of the SCU softball team, is simply being a part of the team. Of course, I love being able to play the sport I love at such a competitive level, but above all the wins and losses, I will never forget the memories I have made with each team I have played with at Santa Clara. Throughout my four years, I have played with dozens of different girls, and I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to play with and get to know each of them. I know that the relationships I have made through SCU softball will really last a lifetime, and to me that is priceless.
