Bronco Softball Hosts Santa Clara Marriott Round Robin

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Getting set to host its final tournament of the season, Santa Clara softball welcomes Princeton, Grand Canyon, and Cal to the Mission campus for the 2014 Santa Clara Marriott Round Robin. The Broncos will play Princeton Fri., March 21 at 1 p.m., Grand Canyon Sat., March 22 at 12 p.m. and Sun., March 23 at 12:30 p.m., and Cal Sun., March 23 at 3 p.m.

Last week the Broncos took down Princeton 9-1 in the finale of the San Jose State Super Series. Santa Clara is now 4-16 on the year.

Kelly Scribner leads Santa Clara with a .345 (20-58) batting average, a .391 on-base percentage, and a .569 slugging percentage. Scribner has hit two home runs and seven doubles while scoring nine runs and driving in seven. Stephanie Fisher is batting .328 (20-61) with a home run, a triple, and five doubles. Fisher has scored six runs and is second on the team with 10 RBI. Geenamarie Bonilla leads the team with 13 RBI and is batting .283 (13-46). She has hit three doubles and score six runs while swiping two bases.

Ciara Gonzales leads the Broncos with a 3.95 ERA and has tossed 44.1 innings. Gonzales has appeared in 14 games while making six starts and throwing two complete games. Jessica Turner has thrown a team-high 47.2 innings and struck out 21. Turner has appeared in 13 games while making seven starts and has thrown three complete games.

Princeton is 2-9 entering the week. The Tigers have had six games cancelled due to weather this year. Last week they dropped two games to San Jose State and split two with Santa Clara.

Alyssa Schmidt leads Princeton with a .280 (7-25) batting average in nine games. Schmidt has one double, four RBI, and four runs scored. Emily Viggers has a team-best two doubles and is batting .278 (5-18). Viggers has scored two runs and driven in two. Marissa Reynolds has the lone Tiger's home run and leads the team with seven RBI. Reynolds has scored five runs and added a double and a triple.

Erica Nori is tops on the Tigers with a 1.65 ERA in seven games, including two starts and one complete game shutout. Nori has thrown 17.0 innings with 10 strikeouts and also has a save. Shanna Christian leads the team with 23.1 innings pitched and has fanned 11. She has appeared in six games and made five starts.

Grand Canyon enters the week with an overall record of 11-12 and a 1-5 mark on the road. The Lopes took a week off after going 2-3 at the UCLA/CSUN Invitational the week before. They topped Georgetown and Oregon State but fell to CSU Northridge twice and Oregon State in the finale. They will play a double header with Cal on Thurs., March 20 before heading to Santa Clara.

Kelsy Barak is tops on the team with a .347 (26-75) batting average and has started all 23 games. Barak leads Grand Canyon with four home runs and 14 RBI. She has added four doubles and scored 18 runs. Kayla Henry is hitting .343 (24-70) with six RBI, 15 runs scored, and two doubles. She leads the Lopes with four stolen bases. Nicole Newbury is batting .339 (19-56) and has hit one home run, one triple, and four doubles. She has 11 RBI and has scored 11 runs.

Kailey Regester leads the team five wins and a 3.26 ERA in 12 games, including seven starts, with one complete game. Regester has tossed 49.1 innings and struck out 16. Stephanie Pesqueira has thrown a team-high 61.0 innings and leads the Lopes with 30 strikeouts. Pesqueira is 4-6 with a 3.90 ERA in 14 games. She has made 10 starts and thrown four complete games with one shutout and one save.

Cal is 12-11 overall and 2-2 away from home. The Golden Bears opened the season ranked No. 24 in the country but fell out of the rankings after going 2-3 in San Diego at the Campbell/Cartier Classic. Last week Cal took two of three from No. 21 Stanford on the road.

Kylie Reed leads the Bears with a .417 (35-84) batting average and seven stolen bases. Reed has hit two doubles to go wit 13 runs scored and 10 RBI. Cheyenne Cordes leads Cal with 20 runs scored and has a .397 (25-63) batting average. Cordes has hit three home runs, one triple, and seven doubles while taking 12 walks to post a .481 OBP. She has scored 20 runs and driven in 14. Danielle Henderson has hit a team-best eight home runs and also leads the team with 21 RBI and 15 walks. She has scored 16 runs and added one double and one triple

Stephanie Trzcinski is 2-3 with a team-low 3.43 ERA in 32.2 innings pitched. She has appeared in 11 games and made three starts with one complete game while striking out 22. Nisa Ontiveros has thrown the most innings on the team with 64.2 and has 36 strikeouts. Ontiveros is 7-5 in 15 games, including 11 starts, and has thrown four complete games.
